Metaphysics asks what exists, and what it means for something to exist at all.
It sits underneath the other branches. Physics describes how matter behaves; metaphysics asks what matter is.
The classic starting questions: what are objects, what are properties, and does anything persist through change?
Ontology asks what there is. Modality asks what could have been. Causation asks what makes what happen.
Most working metaphysicians pick one and stay there — the questions turn out to be deep enough that a whole career fits inside any of them.
Physics tells you spacetime is curved. It doesn't tell you whether spacetime is a thing in its own right or just a pattern in how objects relate.
That second question is metaphysics, and no experiment settles it. Both answers predict identical measurements.
Not with the primary sources. Aristotle and Kant both assume a conversation you haven't had yet.
Start with a survey, get the shape of the disputes, then go back to the originals once you know what they were arguing against.
The inventory question: what kinds of things are on the final list? Objects, certainly. Properties, probably. Numbers, events, holes, absences — all contested.
The fights are rarely about the obvious entries. They're about whether the strange ones reduce to the ordinary ones.
Necessity and possibility. Water is necessarily H₂O; it merely happens to have rained here yesterday.
The puzzle is what makes modal claims true. Nothing you can point at in the actual world seems to be the fact that something else could have happened.
Hume pointed out that we only ever see one event follow another. We never observe the connecting sinew — we infer it from habit.
Everything since has been an attempt to say what that inference tracks, if anything.
That was the logical positivists' charge, and they meant it as a demolition.
The standard reply is that the charge is self-defeating: 'only testable claims are meaningful' is not itself a testable claim. Whether that's a real defence or a debating trick is still argued.
More than they admit. Every interpretation of quantum mechanics is a metaphysical position — many-worlds and collapse make identical predictions and disagree only about what is real.
Physicists tend to call this 'interpretation' rather than metaphysics, which keeps the peace.
Eventually, yes — he sets the agenda everyone else responds to, and the Metaphysics is where the vocabulary comes from.
But it's lecture notes, not a book. It repeats itself, breaks off mid-argument, and assumes you were in the room.
Look for one organised by problem rather than by philosopher. You want the universals chapter to put realists and nominalists side by side, not to march through history.
The Stanford Encyclopedia is free, unusually rigorous, and better than most textbooks here.
A fair amount, though the quality varies more than it does in print. University lecture series tend to beat interview podcasts — the format forces structure.
Avoid anything promising to explain the nature of reality in twenty minutes.
Two red apples share something. That shared thing — redness itself — is a universal.
Realists say it exists independently of any red object. Nominalists say only the apples exist, and that 'redness' is a label we apply after the fact.
Seven is prime whether or not anyone has ever thought so, which makes it hard to call a convention. But you can't kick it, and it isn't anywhere.
So either there are abstract objects, or mathematics is true without being about anything. Both options cost you something.
They turn modal talk into ordinary quantification. 'Possibly P' becomes 'there is a world where P' — and then the logic behaves itself.
The machinery works beautifully. The argument is over whether those worlds are real places or a useful fiction.
That was the tidy answer for a while: necessary truths are true by definition, so metaphysics collapses into lexicography.
Kripke broke it. 'Water is H₂O' is necessary, but it was discovered by chemistry, not by consulting the meaning of 'water'.
Quine's. He argued that you cannot avoid ontology — you can only do it carelessly.
Look at what your best scientific theories quantify over. If physics says 'there exists an electron such that...', you are committed to electrons, and the commitment came from the science.
No, but they left a mark. The field came back with far more attention to language and far less tolerance for grand systems.
Verificationism itself collapsed. Nobody could state the criterion in a form that admitted science and excluded metaphysics.
Not the way physics does, and pretending otherwise is a mistake.
What it offers is consistency pressure. A metaphysics that can't accommodate relativity, or that makes ordinary objects impossible, has told you something — just not by way of an experiment.
The Categories — it's short, and it's where substance, quality and quantity get separated out for the first time.
Then Book Zeta of the Metaphysics, which is the hard core, and which everyone from Aquinas to Kit Fine is still arguing with.
No. But you should know that several of the load-bearing words are untranslatable, and that translators quietly disagree about them.
Ousia gets rendered as substance, essence, or being depending on who is translating, and the choice changes the argument.
The better lecture series post them, and it's worth checking before you commit — this is material you'll want to reread rather than replay.
Dense passages are much easier to hold onto on the page than in your ears.
Interview-format shows survive interruption better than lecture series, because each episode restarts the context for you.
The tradeoff is depth. You'll get the shape of a debate but rarely the argument that settles it.
By paying elsewhere. Class nominalism says redness is just the set of red things; resemblance nominalism says the apples simply resemble each other, full stop.
Both then have to explain why the resemblance holds without appealing to a shared property.
A property treated as a particular rather than a universal — this apple's redness and that apple's redness as two distinct things that happen to be exactly similar.
It's the compromise position: you keep properties without one thing being wholly present in many places.
To be is to be the value of a bound variable.
Regiment your theory into logical form, see what the existential quantifiers range over, and that is your ontology. The commitment is already there in what you assert — the criterion just makes it visible.
That the question is ambiguous. Ask 'are there numbers?' inside mathematics and the answer is trivially yes. Ask it from outside, as a question about reality, and there is nothing to settle it.
Quine denied the distinction. The field followed Quine, and the worry keeps resurfacing anyway.
The search for what makes something the thing that it is. Aristotle runs through the candidates — matter, form, the compound, the universal — and rejects most of them.
It's the densest thing he wrote, and there is still no consensus on what he concluded.
For the Metaphysics, the revised Oxford translation is the usual default, and Ross's notes are still worth having beside it.
For a first pass, a good annotated selection beats the complete works — the apparatus matters more than the coverage.
